In celebration of Buddha’s Enlightenment Day we will engage in Nyungne Retreat, a special two-day fasting purification practice to emphasize compassion for all living beings. This special retreat involving fasting and prostrations is performed in conjunction with prayers to Thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion. It is very powerful for purifying negative karma, pacifying strong delusions, receiving blessings, and increasing our love, compassion and bodhichitta.
You can participate in one or both days. You must attend the 6:30am Mahayana Precepts on each day that you are attending.
When we take the eight Mahayana Precepts, we promise to abstain for twenty-four hours from eight actions:
3. Sexual activity
5. Taking intoxicants
6. Eating after lunch (meaning we only eat lunch.)
7. Sitting on high or luxurious thrones or seats
8. Wearing ornaments, perfume, singing and dancing, etc.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
