We formally enter into Buddhism by going for refuge to the Three Jewels — Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Buddha is the source of all teachings and blessings, Dharma is the inner experience or realization of Buddha’s teachings, and Sangha are the sincere Dharma practitioners who help us along the path by showing a good example, giving teachings, and giving good advice.
By relying upon the Three Jewels we establish an inner refuge of spiritual experience in our heart, which is the foundation for freedom, joy, and protection from suffering, both here and now and for the future.
During this special event, you will have the opportunity to take the vows of Mahayana Refuge, promising to turn to Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, for the rest of your life as your ultimate source of refuge.
Gen Menla will first give a talk explaining the meaning, benefits, and commitments of Buddhist refuge practice. The talk will then be followed by the Refuge Vow Ceremony for those who wish to formally become a Buddhist.
