Nyungne Retreat - A Buddhist practice of fasting and purification

Saturday & Sunday, April 13 - 14

As a precursor to celebrating Buddha’s Enlightenment Day on April 15th, join us as we engage in the powerful purification practice of Nyungne. This special two-day fasting purification practice emphasizes compassion for all living beings.

During this retreat, we will practice fasting, make prostrations (bowing), and offer chanted prayers to Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion. This practice is a powerful way to purify negativity, pacify strong delusions, receive blessings, and increase our love, compassion, and Bodhichitta.

Important Information

You must attend the 6:30am Mahayana Precepts in order to attend the other sessions.

For fasting on day one, you eat only the lunch meal, however you can drink water, juice, tea, etc. Fasting on the second day you refrain from eating and drinking entirely for 24 hours. More information will be explained in the precepts session at 6:30 am.

When we take the 8 Mahayana Precepts, we promise to abstain for 24 hours from 8 actions:

1. Killing
2. Stealing
3. Sexual activity
4. Lying
5. Taking intoxicants
6. Eating after lunch (meaning we only eat lunch.)
