A Day of Pure Practice: Pure Life Precepts and Heart Jewel
This special practice day will begin with the granting of the Eight Mahayana Precepts, followed by the Heart Jewel prayers. Participants will receive powerful one-day vows in a simple, heartfelt ceremony, taking them with bodhichitta intention to benefit all living beings. Afterward, there will be time for guided meditation, recitation, and quiet contemplation centered on Heart Jewel prayers.
Engaging in the Eight Mahayana Precepts helps to purify negative karma, strengthen moral discipline, and create powerful causes for inner peace and spiritual growth. We combine the Pure Life practice with Heart Jewel so that this day brings a rare opportunity to deepen reliance on the spiritual guide, increase wisdom and compassion, and gather vast merit in a short time. Through fasting and maintain moral discipline we can experience greater mental clarity, lightness, and a renewed sense of purpose and connection.
The precepts, according to tradition are taken at dawn – but we will start at 7:15am. They are kept for 24 hours. Our day will start early with a brief introduction and the vow ceremony. After a short break, we will engage in Heart Jewel practice with meditation. We can enjoy the rest of our day maintain the 8 precepts, including fasting all day except lunch or attending class and enjoying a vegetarian lunch after.
